A handshake instead of a kiss

Author: Suzanne Willis

Suzanne Willis, Southwest Florida etiquette consultant. suzannewillis.comHandshakes are an important cornerstone in business (web to web, couple of pumps, look in the eye). But what do you do if someone goes for a kiss, a hug or a simple touch on the arm and you really don’t want them to be so friendly? Is it even appropriate to show these forms of greetings in the workplace?

From a professional standpoint, it’s best to stick with a handshake. But here are a few guidelines for the various types of greetings:

The Air Kiss: While this is good for avoiding an actual touch on the face/skin, it can come across as insincere.

Kiss on the cheek: Only if you know the person very well and this is in a semi-social event should you consider a kiss on the cheek as appropriate. In an office setting this could be misunderstood by co-workers.

Bear Hug: This two-armed hug is best for close friends you haven’t seen in a long time.

Semi-Hug: Almost a hug but an embrace when an arm is placed briefly around the other person’s shoulders. This is sometimes appropriate in business but usually only when conducted with those of the same sex and it’s a close personal relationship.

The Affectionate: This handshake hand-touch combo is when the left hand covers the right hand or another part of the person’s arm during the handshake. This shows a form of affection and should never be used the first time you meet someone.
